Winemakers are looking for ways to cut emissions, prompting several to get behind the launch of a remarkable new bottle design into the Aussie market next year.

| “It looks a bit like a bottle of bubble-bath,” said my somewhat sceptical wife, as I presented her with the net-zero future of wine.does require a cognitive leap. It’s like seeing a wine bottle in a concave mirror, all flattened out. Even pouring it into a glass is a new and unfamiliar experience, requiring an adjustment to my sommelier-style flick of the wrist.

“If you got a group of smart people in a room and asked them to come up with a vessel to take wine from the winery to dining tables, they would not come up with a round glass bottle,” he says. “It’s space-inefficient, it shatters easily, it’s very heavy.” Garçon Wines began shipping wine in flat PET bottles in mid-2018, and the following year it began talking to the British arm of Accolade Wines. Not only does the Aussie company have a dominant position on British supermarket shelves, but it also runs Europe’s largest bottling facility, Accolade Park, which can churn out up to 1 million bottles a day.

Navarro says it’s time to unlearn what we have learned: our current tradition is not as old as we think. He holds up an unusual, Aladdin’s-Cave like bottle. “This is a wine bottle of the 17th century. It’s a British invention. In the 19th century, the French improved on that bottle, with the bottle we use today,” he says.“But we’re not in the 19th century now.
