Why the Morehouse College gender policy is a significant step for black transgender men:
to be black and transgender. Moreover, while transgender women have a plight that is more difficult than their male counterparts, transgender men experience significant barriers as well. For example, according to the 2015 survey, 15% of black transgender men were unemployed; 27% were living in poverty and 39% experienced homelessness at some point in their life.
Having the opportunity to pursue higher education in an environment that reflects who you are at your core is priceless. And to do so at an institution that has made an unequivocal affirmation of your identity has the potential to be a powerful experience for these men, some of which may be having a positive educational experience for the first time in their life.
