That seems to have been the response of many people to the news that theA quick look on the castle’s website shows that, within hours of the announcement, the tours are already pretty much sold out – even the ones that will set you back an extra £50 if you’d like to partake of afternoon tea.
With its fairytale turrets and towers and walls of grey granite from a local quarry, it nestles in the hills of, hidden from the world. Ever since it was built, Balmoral has been a haven for monarchs and their families – most of whom seem to share a hardy love of the great outdoors: the misty moorlands and the bracing picnics. The late Queen’s granddaughter, Eugenie, described it as “a lovely base for granny and grandpa… where you just have room to breathe and run”.
