The days in the Bay Area have been sunny, but a brown haze has spread across the sky and air quality has deteriorated. What's going on?
A steady stream of storms swept the San Francisco Bay Area throughout December, keeping the air clean and fresh.
In recent days, a ridge of high pressure has been hunkered down over California, blocking storm activity. The days have been sunny, but a brown haze has spread across the sky and air quality has deteriorated. "As the storm systems moved through, we have wind, we have rain, the air mass is less stagnant," explained Roger Gass, a forecaster with the National Weather Service."But when we sit under this high pressure, that allows the air across the region to become more stagnant. There's not a lot of mixing in the air. Kind of like when you have a pond of water that's stagnant, it would be more murky. But if you had water flowing into the pond, it would be more clear.
With the high-pressure over the region, afternoons have been warm. As it gets colder overnight, the warmer air over the colder air acts as a lid, pushing that air down and concentrating the pollution more than it would normally. The weather service explained in aWe've been getting lots of question pertaining to decreased air quality today. Re-sharing a tweet from earlier in December that is relevant today.
