Johnson is the Houdini of British politics. But he hasn’t wriggled out of his predicament yet. The question is, can anyone else save the Tories?
| British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is known for his Houdini-like escapes from moments of mortal strife that would sink many a professional politician.
Johnson’s victory, claiming just 59 per cent of support, looks a lot like one of those. It will do no more than send the Tory plotters and malcontents back to their knife-sharpeners.For his part, Johnson claims the vote has cleared the air. He said afterwards, though not entirely explicitly, that all this obsessing over the victory margin is just the Westminster bubble generating its usual froth.
Part of the reason is that the lockdown was so harsh, and the scars are only just healing. And part of the reason is that it offends the British sense of fair play - the rules should be the same for everyone. There are a variety of reasons. Some are his ardent, undying Brexiteer loyalists. Some have had their loyalty bought through promotions and promises.
Johnson may be damaged goods, but after 12 years in office, which of the many Conservative contenders doesn’t also look a bit shop-soiled?
