A South Australian winemaker and two Victorian sherry drinkers have pulled out all the stops to revive their long-lost favourite tipples.

The 1950s were a fascinating time for Australian wine. Some groundbreaking brands were launched during this decade, from the mass-market Barossa Pearl to the collector’s item Woodley’s Treasure Chest series of Coonawarra reds, both designed by leading Adelaide commercial artist Wytt Morro.

I’ve drunk Metalas from that era and they were lovely old Australian “clarets”: full of the warm, generous ripe fruit flavours that Langhorne Creek is renowned for. The vineyard and original homestead have remained family-run since then: fifth-generation owner Guy Adams, who now manages the place with his wife, Liz, took over in 1981. But the Metalapassed through various changes of ownership, ending up as part of the Treasury Wine Estates portfolio, along with Penfolds, Wynns, Seppelt, etc.

People are increasingly interested in provenance, says Guy Adams. “They’re looking for that connection.”“We’ve been trying to get the label back for years,” says Adams. “As time goes on, big companies can lose track of the value of what they’ve got. But this label has a really strong connection to South Australian history. And I think people are more and more interested in where things come from. They’re looking for that connection.
