The TV adaptation of Heather Morris’ bestselling book is extraordinary. For its 28-year-old star, it was also the toughest role he has ever undertaken.

, the story of Lali Sokolov and his wife Gita Furman, sits a dark and difficult piece of architecture: the sprawling Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II.

The location is stunning, even if the emotional impact of standing in its midst is difficult to put into words. The attention to detail on the series is extraordinary, much of it courtesy of production designer Stevie Herbert and costume designer Ján Kocman, under the leadership of series director Tali Shalom-Ezer. Herbert locked down crucial details in the recreation of the camp. And Kocman sourced authentic fabrics to make the camp uniforms.

“It’s no wonder that people respond to that because it’s a glimmer of light in so much darkness,” Hauer-King says. “At the same time, on screen you have the capacity to have more facets to the story, and I think it was important for us to portray certain aspects of the camp that may or may not have been as visible in the book. We were all very wary of in any way diluting the context or the circumstances.

There was also a sense that the man Lali was in Auschwitz would have been a very different man to the man he was when he was in his 80s, Hauer-King adds. “And because so much of the story is about his memory, it takes on a different tone somehow.”
