BOILER-PIPE: Professor David Ellsworth from the University of Western Sydney, who studies the impact of urban heat, said it's not just about planting new trees. "Planting five million is a good goal to have, but what we need is five million big trees and they're not big immediately," he said. "We also have to really think about the large trees that we have, retaining what we can, and keeping these parts of the west cool.

" He and his team have been mapping urban heat for the University of Western Sydney in an attempt to inform councils on how to reduce the heat island effect. Researcher Dr Sebastian Pfautsch used a drone and infrared technology to work out ways to cool the area down. "We're then trying to advise councils and constructions companies how to reduce temperature loads in these new suburbs," he said.
