OPINION: This elegant solution to our Australia Day angst has been overlooked.

Australia deserves to be celebrated. The end of January is almost the ideal time to do so. A bookend to Christmas and the summer break. Beaches and barbecues. Tennis and cricket. Except, January 26? Really? Which other country celebrates the date its land was invaded?January 26 is offensive not only to Indigenous Australians but to millions who want to celebrate shamelessly on our national day.

This would be consistent with other public holidays with flexible dates, such as Labour Day, Queen’s Birthday and Easter. It also guarantees us a long weekend before we have to get serious about work and study again. But let’s make it, not a Monday, but the fourth Friday in January.
