Will Rogers, the Oklahoma-born humorist, writer and actor who deemed San Antonio one of America’s “unique cities,” advocated for better treatment of the Alamo.who served chili con carne — what he’d call “a bowl of blessedness” in the early 1900s.
Rogers didn’t always seem sure San Antonio ranked up with San Francisco and New Orleans in his category of unique cities. In a 1926 address to the Old Trail Drivers Association, he shamed the Alamo City for mistreating the Alamo. After the Alamo’s ruins had functioned as a grocery and liquor store and warehouse in the late 1800s,continued. It had a bar, police station, jail and auto dealership before it was fully converted into a historic site by the state and Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
