"As a chrysalis, the ladybeetles looks a bit like bird poo," she said.She said beetles have hard shells and a straight line down the back, with wings which open like elevator doors.While the lifecycle of the ladybird is not long, Ms Henry said the beetles would aggregate when looking for somewhere warm and dry over winter in order to live across a year.
She said another risk of introducing ladybirds to a garden was that they could simply fly away, or be eaten by birds. "A good alternative is to plant things that support them and attract them into your garden," she said. "Plant things that create lots of pollen and nectar and maintain a balance of natural predators — spiders, wasps, ladybeetles."
