Having major goals and working hard to achieve them has always been seen as a good thing. But what if they make you miserable?

She says she has a"really burning sense of ambition and disappointment" about her unrealised goal — but she also"completely and wholeheartedly" values all she's accomplished in her career.

"I don't know that I'll ever get to a point where I go: 'Oh, I've achieved all the things I want to achieve — I'm a happy camper'," she says.If a major goal is distressing rather than motivating you, Dr Williams recommends you engage in"conscious self-reflection" or do"a bit of a check-in on yourself".

"That progress in itself should be satisfying, because you are stepping towards that outcome — even if in the moment it feels a bit unpleasant and it requires sacrifice," she says.
