GFG Alliance has finally been able to restart the blast furnace at the Whyalla Steelworks, with employees returning to their full shifts after taking heavy pay cuts.

A new thermal lancing system is being developed to prevent further shutdowns.During this time many of the 1,100 employees at the steelworks were shifted onto an eight-hour day shift roster, rather than the 12-hour shifts across the normal 24-hour-a-day operation.During restart efforts there were several setbacks including damage to the blast furnace shell, which halted works until the damage was eventually repaired.

"We're calling on Liberty Steel when they undertake a maintenance shutdown next time — don't lower the temperature too much," he said.Workers welcomed back "There needs to be some consideration in employees' personal responsibilities with caring responsibilities," he said. The shutdown left the community and employees concerned as the steelworks is the town's main source of income.City of Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone said seeing the steelworks up and running has brought a huge sigh of relief from locals."These operations are critical for our community."
