Damaging winds across Victoria over the weekend eased by Sunday evening, but not before the State Emergency Service received hundreds of calls for help.

As the winds eased across Melbourne on Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology reduced its severe weather warnings for Melbourne by lunchtime and then cancelled them at 5pm. Duty forecaster Joanna Hewes said the combination of a high-pressure system across the Tasman Sea and a cold front that approached Melbourne from the west had led to strong northerly winds.
