Wildlife volunteers are conducting 'black walks', systematically scoping the aftermath of WA's Cervantes fire to find injured animals, and record the dead.

Small reptiles such as the western bearded dragon struggled to escape the blaze.Volunteer wildlife carers are working to find surviving animals three weeks after a blaze tore through a massive swathe of bushland north of Perth.Volunteers will continue to scour the area at their own cost.Wildlife volunteers can finally access the fireground of what was an emergency-level blaze about 240km north of Perth three weeks ago.

"It's actually quite sad because these guys have less animals in a greater area," she said.Injured animals are vulnerable to wandering on roads and getting hit by vehicle.Ms Asparon said she was finding many blackened corpses or severely injured animals who had been suffering for weeks."It's really, really quite demoralising, sometimes you just come home and cry."Ms Asparon said, along with the emotional burden, volunteers were giving up their time and money to help.

It referred to a fact sheet which said "there are well-established networks of skilled and experienced wildlife rehabilitation operators around Western Australia which are supported by DBCA".
