OPINION: The worry now is whether Mr Andrews’ thumping win will embolden Anthony Albanese to revive the old Labor faith in government intervention at the national level.
Daniel Andrews’ crushing victory in Saturday’s Victorian election is a stunning endorsement of Australia’s most left wing, most economically interventionist and most indebted government, let alone of the premier who imposed the most punishing COVID-19 lockdowns outside China.– is that they will encourage all those within the labour movement who seek to impose an anti-business agenda of higher spending, increased taxes, higher debt and more regulation.
Liberal victories in the leafy inner-Melbourne seats of Kew and Hawthorn – which form part of the federal electorate of Kooyong lost to a teal independent by former treasurer Josh Frydenberg in May – might salvage something from the wreckage. But unless the Liberals can find a way to reconnect with what used to be its professional middle-class base it will remain out of power in Victoria – and perhaps federally – for a long time.
The Andrews government uses identity politics to wedge moderate and conservative Liberals on cultural issues. It has abandoned fiscal prudence and embraced big borrowing and spending on infrastructure. It does this in partnership with the thuggish and law-breaking CFMEU and its Victorian construction boss, John Setka, whose continued industrial and political influence in Victoria Mr Andrews disgracefully harbours.
After locking up Victoria’s gas reserves, Mr Andrews blames “obscene” profits for high power prices and encourages federal Labor to impose big stick export controls and price caps on LNG exports.
