EXPLAINER Will Cardinal George Pell go to jail?

Larger text size Very large text size Cardinal George Pell, once a trusted adviser to Pope Francis and Australia’s highest-ranking Catholic official, has been found guilty of sexually abusing two choirboys in St Patrick’s Cathedral in East Melbourne 22 years ago. He was found guilty by a jury in Melbourne’s County Court on December 11 last year. Australian media has been barred from reporting the verdict until now, due to a court-imposed suppression order.

At the conclusion of the retrial in December, Judge Kidd told Pell's lawyer, Robert Richter, QC, his client could expect to be remanded in custody after his pre-sentence hearing on February 27. Was there supposed to be another trial? Pell was also charged with molesting boys in a swimming pool in his Victorian home town of Ballarat when he was a priest in the 1970s. He was due to face trial on those charges.
