Republican Will County Board member Dan Butler of Frankfort said members can continue to push to save the courthouse until bids are awarded, and the county receives a demolition permit.

The Will County Board Executive Committee rejected a proposal Thursday to form an ad hoc committee that would explore reusing the former county courthouse building in Joliet.

Butler said an ad hoc committee of five board members could have studied ways the courthouse could have been repurposed and if the county could take advantage of tax credits available for historic buildings, he said.Butler said preserving the courthouse had bipartisan support from fiscal conservatives interested in saving money, environmentalists wishing to keep the four-story building from a landfill and those who want to preserve Joliet’s history.

The Joliet Historic Preservation Commission voted last month to recommend to the Joliet City Council that the courthouse be designated a. The Joliet City Council is expected to vote on the recommendation later this month, and no demolition permits can be issued until that vote takes place, according to city ordinances.

Because the courthouse was named in May to the National Register of Historic Places, there is also a regulatory review process ongoing to ensure all considerations have been looked at before demolition can proceed, Adamowski said.
