With three out of five members of Harris County Commissioners Court up for re-election and early voting just one month away, the county's budget process has stalled twice as the parties have exchanged accusations over law enforcement funding.

. Hegar’s accusations were prompted by a pair of Harris County constables who complained their budgets were being decreased after county leaders said they no longer could use leftover funds in future budget cycles.

"It's no surprise that this was done in concert with Mealer's campaign army sitting in the audience," Rottinghaus said, adding their presence"underscores the performative aspect of it, and I think that's useful for them." "It's difficult to imagine a scenario under the currently approved budget where we could continue to go forward with that cadet class," said Jason Spencer, Gonzalez’s chief of staff."I don't know yet whether it's impossible, and so we have to look at what other options we would have, but we know it's going to be drastic and it's going to impact service levels.

"We're working together with the Elections Administrator to finalize their budget for the November election," Budget Director Daniel Ramos said."If they require a supplemental, the Elections Administrator will make a recommendation at Commissioners Court for their approval." "We are 3,000 colonoscopies behind," Porsa said."There are 3,000 patients who need colonoscopies because they have screened positive for potential colon cancer who are waiting on a waiting list."

Hidalgo argued the county needs more law enforcement officers across the board – investigators, detention officers, district attorneys – not just patrol officers, and she did not want to reward the constables who complained about their budgets to the state, which she described as extortion.
