It’s been 10 years in the planning and will double the size of the AGNSW – but some critics see the Sydney Modern as a gallery the city doesn’t want, let alone need.
) has railed against the gallery’s “monomaniacal quest” to build its new trophy building while, he says, its exhibition program has deteriorated with entire shows borrowed from overseas instead of being brought together by its own curators.“Unless the AGNSW begins to focus more thoroughly on exhibitions, there is every reason to believe that Sydney Modern will be a gigantic and costly flop,” McDonald wrote in 2018.
On this, the jury is out. Some say the two galleries are “hugely collaborative” and “highly collegiate” while others say “the MCA will be unbelievably threatened” by Sydney Modern. For his part, Brand shies away from the word “competitive” when asked if the new building was intended to put the gallery in a better position to host international exhibitions, such as the NGV’s Blockbuster series.
One concern he does acknowledge: that guests might be overly excited by the new wing and forget about its older sister. Hence, he has commissioned a complete rehang of the AGNSW to combat any fatigue Sydneysiders might feel, and also to “break ranks” with the prevailing ethos of Australian art galleries: that Australian art must hang with Australian art.
