A sustained, extreme heat event hasn’t happened yet this year in the San Francisco Bay...

, San Francisco soared to 106 on Sept. 1. It was the hottest temperature ever recorded in the city with records going back more than 100 years.hot air toward the ground. As the hot air gets compressed, it warms up. If the high pressure grows strong enough, it can minimize winds and fog.In the Bay Area, the region’s interior valleys bake in July and August, but the city of San Francisco and the coast generally stay cool due to foggy, breezy conditions.

Sometimes high pressure that’s strong enough to slacken the sea breeze does build in mid-summer. But the coastal region’s most significant heat waves typically don’t occur until September or October. In fact, September is the warmest month of the year in San Francisco with an average daytime high of 70.2, and October, when the average daytime high is 69.8, is the second-hottest month.

The chances for an offshore event linger into November. “Back in 2020, we had an offshore wind event in November and that caused the Glass Fire,” Murdock said. “Luckily, we haven’t had much in the way of our pattern tracking like that this season. We had a bit of a hint of offshore winds in the long-term forecast, and it started looking bad over the weekend, but as the forecast continues to build confidence, it’s looking less and less.
