The thriller is poised to be South Korea’s first nominee in the former foreign-language-film category, but the real question is: How much more can it do?
Bong Joon-ho is sanguine about his first experience in the Oscar race: “I’m just trying to have fun.”“Looking at Bong Joon-ho’s earlier films, if they had been submitted, would they have worked? No way,” said one veteran awards strategist. “As a rule I think that genre doesn’t work as well.”was passed over by the Academy in 2009. But if he’s perplexed by his country’s previous track record at the Oscars, he’s not showing it.
If you were to draw a map of the world based on Oscar’s attention, France, Italy, and Japan might look like continents rather than countries. The three have 29 wins among them, for films great——and otherwise. By the 1990s the Academy had become notorious for routinely ignoring instant foreign classics, from Germany’sU.S. art house box-office hits passed over for less aesthetically bold choices at the Oscars.
These frequent fumbles laid the groundwork for what’s now a much-improved category. In 2008 the Academy began implementing changes intended to broaden the category’s scope.
“What is missing? What has the bigger group let slip through their fingers?” That’s how Larry Karaszewski, a fellow cochair, described the questions the executive committee typically ask themselves. “Or what haven’t they seen?” Weyermann added. “That’s the beauty of the executive committee. We work hard to see as many of the films as we can. When it comes time to vote, it’s an intense, informed, passionate conversation.
There have been other tweaks to the process as well, from screenings in more cities to opening up the final nominations vote to any member who has seen all 10 films on the shortlist. It’s still up to each country to submit its strongest film, a process the Academy has no role in. In theory, though, the international feature category is better equipped than ever to pick the year’s best non-American film.continues growing at its current rate, it won’t need the executive committee to help it.
