Monterey Car Week auction sales break records every year, and we've chosen the cars most likely to do the same in 2023.
, held every summer on the golf course of the Pebble Beach resort on the Monterey Peninsula in northern California, attracts the top tier car collectors from around the globe. These one-percenters gather here to display, commune with, ogle, and bitchily judge one another's irreplaceable vintage automobiles. This year, the events take place from August 16–20.
This concentration of car-obsessed rich people also attracts adjacent enterprises, and one of the most logical is the sale of collectible vehicles. Obviously, not just any old cars will do. So rarefied is the market at Monterey that, according to the valuation experts at Hagerty, 19 of the 30 most expensive cars ever sold at auction have traded hands during Car Week over the years.
This year's auction listings offer little to suggest that 2023 will rupture this trend. In fact, quite the opposite. Somewhere around a half-billion dollars' worth of valuable iron is on offer on the peninsula during the ultra-luxury bacchanal. We combed through the listings from the biggest and most prestigious auction houses with a presence to cull this cache of cars expected to bring the biggest money.
