At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a single word unified dozens of manufacturers: Matter
If January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is any measure, 2023 will be the year that home automation finally gets its act together and, to borrow a phrase from Apple, just works.
Hisense showed off a new version of its ConnectLife home automation system that will take the temperature recommendation from a cooking video a householder is watching on a Hisense TV, and use that recommendation to automatically set the pre-heat temperature on a Hisense oven. Theoretically, the TV should be able to turn on a spotlight above your food preparation counter at the same time as turning on the oven.
Theoretically, the TV should be able to turn on a Yeelight Cube spotlight above your food preparation counter at the same time as turning on the oven. Will a Hisense cooking video, which incidentally has to be annotated with metadata spelling out the cooking temperatures before it can control a Hisense oven, really be able to control a Matter-compliant but non-Hisense oven, or is that a feature that’s outside the purview of the Matter standard?
It’s also unclear what “coming soon” means when device manufacturers talk about adding Matter compliance to their systems.
