At his best, Willie Garson’s Stanford Blatch was Carrie’s confidant and co-conspirator, equal parts relatable and familiar

Photo: Craig Blankenhorn/Hbo/Darren Star Prods/Kobal/Shutterstock Willie Garson, known for his role as Stanford Blatch on Sex and the City, passed away on Tuesday at age 57. As reported by People, Garson had pancreatic cancer and passed away after falling ill.

Fellow Sex and the City castmates have begun paying tribute to the late actor on social media. “We all loved him and adored working with him. He was endlessly funny on-screen and in real life,” Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda in the series, tweeted. “He was a source of light, friendship and show business lore. He was a consummate professional — always.

Stanford Blatch was the archetypal gay best friend which, of course, comes with valid criticism. At his worst, Stanford could seem like an accessory to Carrie’s story line, his presence a commodity more than a fully realized character. But at his best, he was Carrie’s confidant and co-conspirator, equal parts relatable and familiar.

Many aspects of SATC do not hold up today, but one thing that remains relatable is Stanford’s experience with online dating. In the “fetish” episode of season two, it’s revealed that he likes to chat with men about underwear, and that his username is “Rick9Plus.” He’s having great cybersex with a guy who goes by “Bigtool4U,” and he wants to meet in person.
