After more than a decade of negotiations, Broken Hill's Wilyakali people have had a native title claim officially recognised by the federal court. The claim expands from the Barrier Ranges in New South Wales' far west over the border into South Australia.
The Wilyakali people have been recognised as official custodians of a large stretch of land that covers areas of regional South Australia and NSW.abc.net.au/news/wilyakali-people-traditional-lands-recognised-by-federal-court/102790360A native title claim spanning thousands of kilometres in regional South Australia and New South Wales has been granted to Broken Hill's traditional landowners the Wilyakali people.
The endeavour to have the claim recognised spans more than a decade, instigated by the then-Wilyakali elder Maureen O'Donnell, who passed away in 2022, and supported by many other prominent Wilyakali people. They have also had support from an anthropologist to investigate the land and a solicitor to have the claim recognised in court.
"We remember them as well because they also had a part of it [to] give us recognition that we are the custodians of that country."The consent determination hearing took place at Maurice's Bore, attended by about 100 people, including representatives from the Wilyakali and Federal Court, as well as local graziers.
Federal Court Justice Elizabeth Raper formally implemented the native title claim on Monday on country. "Quite a few [Wilyakali people] were moved along the coast [and] put in resettlement places," Ms Clark said.
