Regular air temperatures could drop into the single digits, and strong wind gusts could make it feel as cold as 10 to 25 degrees below zero.
Occasionally the circulation weakens, allowing pockets of cold air to break away from the Arctic region, drift down into Canada and then into the northern United States. It also could drift into other parts of the northern hemisphere, like Europe and Asia.
“As the Arctic air sweeps southeastward across the region on Friday, temperatures may fall all day in some locations,” AccuWeather noted in a forecast report on its website. “Temperatures by mid- to late-afternoon could be 10 to 20 degrees or more lower than the start of the day, especially across New England and the interior mid-Atlantic states.”
By early Saturday morning, many areas of New Jersey will have temperatures of 10 degrees or lower, the weather service said, and the wind will make it feel as cold as zero to 20 or 25 degrees below zero at times, especially in the far northern areas. Trenton’s record low for Feb. 4 is 1 degree, set in 1918, and Atlantic City’s record low is 3 degrees below zero, set in 1996.
