Victoria's emergency services are preparing for a day of elevated fire danger with wind gusts of up to 80 kilometres an hour forecast across the state and temperatures expected to soar to the mid-thirties.

Country Fire Association Chief Officer Steve Warrington says grass fires pose the greatest threat. Mallee, in the state's north-west, is facing extreme fire danger while neighbouring regions have been issued with a severe fire danger rating. A total fire ban has been imposed on those regions including Melbourne.
