Windrush lawyer stands firm amid Tory efforts to “demonize” her work In an interview with The Voice Jacqueline McKenzie says a 'vile Tory party-led attack on me hasn't worked” By richardsudan
The dossier framed McKenzie as a “lefty lawyer”, and a close Labour government adviser. In addition to her work on supporting victims of the Windrush, McKenzie has been instrumental in challenging the government’s controversial decision to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.Surreal, McKenzie described the “surreal” experience of reading the dossier meticulously scrutinizing her decades-long career.
She said: “My clients are all of society, and all of us. My clients are the people, British and otherwise, who make the UK strong. “Reading the CCHQ dossier on me was surreal. They’d done a deep dive into my life going back to the 1980s, covering organisations I’d associated with, events I’d spoken at, and of course, my work as a lawyer, for no other reason than to demonize not just me but migrants and the Windrush generation.
“And I represent EU citizens still struggling to navigate the EUSS scheme, British citizens trying to bring partners to the UK, often shocked at the complexity of the process, business people needing help with visas for their workers, and of course, hundreds of people affected by the Windrush Scandal, still ongoing and still a fetter on the political and social landscape of the UK.
“That is why – as we have said repeatedly – it is wrong to describe lawyers as ‘lefty’ or ‘activist’ simply on the basis of the causes they advocate on behalf of their clients.
