South Australian Wine Industry Association chief executive Brian Smedley says “our population has to increase”.

South Australian Wine Industry Association chief executive Brian Smedley said wine producers in the state, which is responsible for nearly 60 per cent of Australian wine exports, are screaming out for staff.

Dean Carroll, the chief executive at Brown Family Wine Group, based out of Milawa, in Victoria’s far north-east, says the company, which employs about 300 people, faces a staffing shortage across the board despite offering a 10 per cent increase in wages in some areas. And while they don’t offer sign-on bonuses – neither does Balnaves – they do offer financial incentives for staff members who can bring in other people.

Grape growing, winemaking and wine-related tourism contributed about $45.5 billion to the economy in 2019, according to Wine Australia. The sector supports the employment of more than 160,000 people across Australia , most of whom are located in rural and regional Australia.About 85,000 more people left Australia than arrived in 2020-21, with strict border rules stymying migrant inflows.
