The News Corp Australia executive who oversaw the company’s partnerships with major technology firms is set to be one of the biggest winners as the media group finalises plans for its most significant restructure in a decadeIt could be unveiled as early as Monday.

Pippa Leary, the managing director of client products, is expected to run the “fast and free” division, which houses News Corp Australia’s popular News.com publication. Tensions have been high at News Corp’s Holt Street head office, with News Corp’s global chief executive, Robert Thomson, News UK boss Rebekah Brooks and chairman Lachlan Murdoch descending on Sydney for budget discussions last week.

Sources, who asked to speak anonymously because they were not authorised to comment publicly, said editors had been making their case they cannot cut more rank-and-file reporters, with News Corp Australia’s suite of papers across national, metro and regional employing around 1000 journalists.
