Here’s another tale, this time from a South Bay couple who visited Lisbon.Palo Alto resident Jim Taggart and Menlo Park resident Gillian McFarlane visited Portugal in December, eager to see Lisbon and its many attractions. They checked out restaurants and colorful shops, and visited the cathedral and Castelo de Sao Jorge.
“Other top spots to visit — all easily reachable by mass transit — are the Belem district with its 16th century tower guarding the port entrance and the Jeronimos Monastery . Of course, Belem is also famous for the Pasteis de Belem, a bustling bakery and original home of the Pastel de Belem, the ubiquitous custard tarts.”
Other side trips included the resort town of Cascais and Sintra, where the brightly painted, 19th century Pena Palace is a popular tourist destination.
