With a masterful fourth quarter at Alabama, Texas finds its way to a peak

Texas went into Tuscaloosa and beat Alabama, 34-24, on Saturday night.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A ballyhooed college football game spent hours all sticky and inelegant Saturday night before finally going out of its mind across its last 16 minutes until Texas — Texas! — had itself a recent-years pinnacle.

It turned when Ewers dropped back from the Texas 43-yard line and floated a fine thing to an open tight end Sanders, who began a stirring long run both straight ahead and improvised to the right, for 50 yards all told, to the Alabama 7-yard line. Ewers zipped a seven-yard touchdown pass up the middle to Mitchell with 14:05 to play.

But here came Texas, taking big bites like the 31 yards off a short pass to Jordan Whittington, and the 39 closing yards when Mitchell got gapingly, achingly behind the defense. That touchdown made it 34-24 with 8:23 left, and the game had gone mad.
