Less than four months after statehouse Republicans purged most August elections from Ohio’s calendar, they’re marching toward organizing an Aug. 2023 special election that would make it harder for pro-choice organizers to amend Ohio’s constitution.
Democrats, Wiggam said in a recent interview with conservative radio talk show host Bob Frantz, are on a “crash course” to “decimate” the state constitution. An August election, he said, would ensure the pro-choice backers need 60% of voters to do so.
In a text message Wednesday, Wiggam said changes to the constitution are more important than local tax levies and attract more media attention, meaning voters will be more aware. Rep. Brian Stewart, an Ashville Republican, led the charge in the House to raise the threshold for amending the constitution. However, he declined to comment on the idea of an August 2023 election and said he’ll wait until there’s a proposal in front of him.
“The record is pretty clear,” he said. “We had a bill to eliminate August elections. I supported it. There was an instance where we needed to make a pretty narrow exception for a charter vote … Now we’re a decent time later. There’s a proposal on the table and we’ll consider it as it comes.”
