With COVID surging, Elizabeth announces virtual learning

Elizabeth students will learn remotely from Jan. 3 to Jan. 14, according to aHugelmeyer acknowledged the situation isn’t ideal, and under normal circumstances, in-school learning is preferred.

“The increased positivity rates in our school community have significantly challenged our ability to educate our students in-person,” she wrote. COVID-19 cases have been rising in New Jersey and across the country. The state on Friday broke another daily record, and 37 additional confirmed deaths — the seventh record-setting day since Dec. 22. Before that date, the state’s single-day case record was 6,922, set Jan. 13.. Another 9,808 confirmed cases were reported among staff and students for the week ending Dec. 19, with only 61% of the state’s schools providing data. That’s up from 6,947 cases — 41% higher — the previous week.

Gov. Phil Murphy said Friday he will not force schools to shut down and transition to remote learning. Rather, he will leave the decision up to school districts.
