Rookie scores 20 points against Houston after getting just six vs. Cleveland
LAS VEGAS — For Spurs rookie Malaki Branham, the news that second-year pro Josh Primo had entered the NBA’s health and safety protocols Monday was proof the pandemic hasn’t ended.The loss of Primo also gave Branham another message: It’s time to show off your skills.
Branham struggled in Sunday’s 86-85 loss to Cleveland, missing five of his six shots on the way to just six points. But against the Rockets, the 20th overall pick of last month’s draft “just kind of played his game,” Spurs summer league coach Mitch Johnson said. “I definitely got to put on some muscle,” he said. “I have been working with the strength coach and we’ve been lifting when we don’t have practice or a game, so tomorrow I am going to get in the weight room and get big.”
The Spurs also got double-figure scoring from starting center Dominick Barlow and reserve forward Darius Days . “I thought he was very aggressive,” Johnson said of Barlow. “I thought he was decisive. Again, these young guys at time get caught in between: Should I go left? Should I go right? Should I shoot it or pass it? Should I have done this? And then they overreact with the next decision.
