Some of the country's most popular streaming services prepare to negotiate or push back altogether on plans to force new Australian content rules upon them.

Some are keen to point out the differences between the various companies, despite how similar their offerings may seem.

Their traditional broadcast arms are all subject to existing local content rules, applicable to both free-to-air broadcasters and subscription services. In a statement to the ABC, a spokesperson for Netflix Australia said the company welcomes the regulation but is keen to ensure it works for the sector.

"In order to avoid duplication of regulatory obligations, streaming services owned by the holder of a commercial free-to-air television license should be excluded from any sort of investment obligation," it read. Paramount sought in its submission to ensure that content could be created to cover both local content rules on its streaming arm, as well as quotas on Channel 10.

The major streaming platforms have all pointed to the Australian shows they are already producing as evidence the new rules are largely unnecessary, as the industry is "buoyant".
