Jamison Crowder takes back a punt 61 yards, and the defense finds its footing in Washington’s victory in Atlanta.

Jamison Crowder's 61-yard punt return was Washington's longest since 2016, when Crowder himself took one 89 yards.

It also showed the Commanders’ capability — or at least something closer to it — to get big plays from some less-heralded players.

Linebacker Jamin Davis, the team’s former first-round pick who last year drew the ire of defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio because of his inconsistent play, sealed the game with an interception with 31 seconds remaining. Davis, lined up wide on third and 7, jumped in front of running back Bijan Robinson on a short slant route, tumbling to the ground as his teammates rushed toward him in celebration.

Then in the fourth quarter, when the Falcons stood on Washington’s 7-yard line with a chance to narrow its 24-16 deficit with a little more than five minutes remaining, cornerback Benjamin St-Juste intercepted Ridder in the end zone and quickly took a knee. The defense, which allowed more than 30 points and an average of 413 yards in its previous four outings, held the Falcons to 72 rushing yards, their second-lowest output of the season. The coaches made adjustments too. Containing Robinson was a clear emphasis as the Commanders relied heavily on its “cinco” package, with five down linemen, and altered the second and third levels of their defense.
