The two eldest children of Australia’s richest person Gina Rinehart have been lashed by the WA Supreme Court over the “grossly disproportionate” resources devoted to their failed bid for legally sensitive files it ruled should remain top secret.
Gina Rinehart, right, her children John Hancock and Bianca Rinehart, top, and Rose Porteous with Lang Hancock. But Justice Natalie Whitby ruled the pair had failed to provide sufficient evidence to sustain that claim and rejected the bid, stating it was “without merit”.And in doing so, she criticised the handling of the case and its burden on the public justice system, revealing the hearing took place over six days and the court book spanned 6000 pages.
The 180-page ruling handed down late on Monday provided the greatest insight to date into the row, which unfolded behind closed doors after the 51-day trial in the broader 14-year-long Hope Downs ownership dispute. The lawsuit was instigated by the descendants of Lang Hancock’s school friend-turned-business partner Peter Wright, who claimed royalties on what they said was an asset born out of the “Hanwright” partnership.
