A group of international scholars says Meta should release internal research on how the platform impacts youth mental health with current efforts 'doomed to fail'.
Almost 300 international academics have signed an open letter to Mark Zuckerberg calling for greater transparency and independent oversight of Meta's research into youth mental health.
"With three billion people using Meta platforms for socialising, leisure, and business it is highly plausible that these virtual environments have far-reaching effects on the mental health of younger users — in both positive and negative ways," the letter reads. "While we applaud these attempts to understand how your platforms may be impacting young people's mental health, we believe that the methodologically questionable and secretive ways your teams are conducting this important work is misguided and, in its present state, doomed to fail."
A Meta spokesperson said understanding social media's impact on youth mental health was "an industry-wide challenge". "A survey from just last month suggested that more US teens are using TikTok and YouTube than Instagram or Facebook, which is why we need an industry-wide effort to understand the role of social media in young people's lives."The letter calls for "independent and transparent reviews of all past, present, and future research" on youth mental health along with the company contributing to independent studies, including in non-English speaking countries.
