PUBLISHED 11:58 AM CDT Mar. 24, 2022RUSSIA — After being detained in Russia for weeks, WNBA star Brittney Griner finally met with her United States granted consular official. In a news conference Wednesday, officials gave an update on Griner’s condition.
According to Price, the initial visit with an officer allows them to “check in on the individual and his or her welfare and well-being.” Griner was arrested on Feb. 17 for allegedly having vape cartridges which contained hashish oil in luggage that was searched at the Sheremetyevo Airport near Moscow. If convicted of the offense, the 31-year-old could face up to 10 years in prison. Ever since the news broke of her detainment in Russia, U.S. officials have continued to work on her release.
“Russian officials who know and knew Brittney Griner as a longtime player for their teams and one who’s given great joy to the Russian people — that customs agent well knew that he could have provided her a temporary suspension out of the country and not able to come back for a period of time, could’ve confiscated what she had allegedly and sent her on her way,” said Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee in an interview with Joy Reid on The ReidOut.
“We love and support Brittney and at this time our main concern is her safety, physical and mental health, and her safe return home,” the Phoenix Mercury said.
