Letby's case is haunting the families of victims of Beverley Allitt, who murdered four children in the 1990s.
Kayley Asher was 15 months old when “Angel of Death” nurse Beverley Allitt tried to kill her by injecting an air bubble into her arm.
"This Letby case has brought it all back. My husband just shields Kayley from it. But all we say is this, 'Why weren’t lessons learned? This has all happened before'." Kayley almost died in the 1991 attack when her lungs collapsed when she was attacked by Beverley Allitt. She was resuscitated but was later diagnosed with the rare condition Kabuki makeup syndrome, meaning she has problems with fine motor skills, mobility and hearing.
In 2007, the High Court ruled that she should serve a minimum of 28 years and 175 days in jail, meaning she is now eligible for release at the age of 54. The hospital’s seven consultant paediatricians were called to a meeting in January 2017 and told Letby had done nothing wrong. The nurse had accused them of bullying her, and the doctors were ordered by hospital bosses to write her a letter of apology.
Sharon said: “My heart goes out to the families of Letby’s victims. It’s terrible. Sympathies must also go to Letby’s parents, her family and friends. It’s something they will have to live with forever. I feel sorry for them.”
