A woman was burned in an apartment fire in Melbourne’s northeast which forced 40 residents to evacuate on Sunday night. The blaze started in a unit on the third floor of an apartment building on Cooma St in Preston about 11pm. Firefighters “aggressively” battled the blaze, a Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) spokesperson said, however the unit sustained “extensive” damage. Crews managed to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring apartments however some did suffer damage from smoke.
All 40 occupants of the apartment were evacuated safely including the woman who lived in the unit where the fire started. She did however sustain burns and was taken to hospital in a stable condition. “It was a very intense fire,” FRV commander Brett Hamill said. “So crews did a fantastic job to bring it under control. At this stage the main damage is only to one apartment and a small area in the common place.” Accommodation was found for the evacuated residents however it is hoped some who live in the lower levels will be able to return on Monday. FRV fire investigators will attend the scene to try and determine the cause of the fire
