Houston Police responded to a woman and infant held hostage in a west Houston apartment.
A woman and infant were released safely after being held hostage by a man — either a boyfriend or spouse — early Monday in a west Houston apartment, police said.
The two were unable to leave the apartment and the man was known to have weapons, Houston Police Department SWAT Commander Megan Howard said in aThe woman’s family called the police around 1:30 a.m. concerned for her safety. The family member was on FaceTime with her and she asked to be picked up from the apartment on the 7000 Block of Locke Lane. The family member told officers she seemed afraid for her life and the man was not going to let her out.
The FaceTime call ended and officers arrived, Howard said. Officers were still in the process of collecting information and getting everything set up when the woman came out of the apartment, without the baby, a little after 4 a.m.While officers were speaking with her the man came out holding a baby. When officers tried to place him in custody and secure the baby, he was noncompliant and would not hand over the baby. Howard said they had to use force.
While clearing the apartment, officers found a rifle, two pistols and possibly narcotics. The District Attorney's Office preliminarily accepted charges for kidnapping.Howard said she believes there have been prior calls for service regarding the same man and other members of the family, also involving a weapon.“Thankfully we had more preparation than was needed,” Howard said.
