Several local agencies responded to the incident, including a volunteer from the Trauma Intervention Program of Western North Carolina, who provided emotional and trauma support to Sampson’s husband, according to the program’s director, Christi Hayes.Hayes said the husband was alone and visited the outlook to hike with his wife. The Reems Creek Fire Department was the first to respond to the scene, and NPS law enforcement rangers followed.
Michele Walker, a spokesperson for Mount Mitchell, said there is no further information available at this time.
