Blackpool woman guilty of killing childhood pal who died two years after stabbing him

Mr Fitzsimmons was invited in and the mood was jovial, but when Walton returned home there was a change in atmosphere, the court heard. Walton and Simmonds began whispering among themselves, and Walton ordered Mr Fitzsimmons out of his flat. As Mr Fitzsimmons got up to leave, Walton pushed him back down and stabbed him in the torso. Simmonds joined in the attack with a screwdriver causing four puncture wounds to his torso and back.
Following the attack, Mr Fitzsimmons returned to his flat and called the emergency services. He named Walton and Simmonds as his attackers and was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where his wound was cleaned and sutured.When he became seriously unwell two years later, doctors failed to notice an abnormality on his chest X-ray and he was discharged from hospital. He was found dead at his home on October 5 2019.
Simmonds claimed she was not guilty of killing Mr Fitzsimmonds, who she had known since primary school and considered a friend. She said the fatal injury was caused by Walton and Mr Fitzsimmons would not have died if his injury had been spotted at hospital in 2019. However the jury found she was jointly involved in the original attack, and Mr Fitzsimmons would not have required hospital treatment had he not been stabbed in 2017.Read the latest from the courts
