Student helps make warniing video after terrifying experience
A woman believes she was spiked in a nightclub - at the moment she needed help. The experience left Shannon Fleming horrified and paranoid.
Now she has helped to make a short drama with drama students depicting the dangers of spiking. The students have produced a series of resources aimed at helping others to keep themselves safe during a night out, with support from West Lancashire Police, West Lancashire Borough Council’s Community Safety Partnership, the Lancashire Partnership Against Crime and the Lancashire Violence Reduction Network.
Funding from partners has also provided anti-spiking drinks covers which have been distributed at licensed premises. Shannon feels taking part in the campaign has made her more alert to dangers while on a night out. John Donachie-Ashcroft, 20, also worked on the video. He also has personal experience in spiking, and feels the issue has worsened in recent years. “My mum was spiked in a club. It's not necessarily something new, but it's really elevated in numbers in the past few years, especially since I started university," he said.
