A 33-year-old woman who had been living in Mildura is refused bail after being charged with breaching COVID-19 border directions and a number of traffic offences.
A woman charged with breaching COVID-19 border directions at a South Australian checkpoint has been refused bail.She told a court she was escaping domestic violenceShannon Buckby, 33, was arrested in the early hours of this morning after allegedly failing to stop her sedan at the Yamba border checkpoint on the Sturt Highway, in the Riverland.
Police pursued the car as it turned onto the Old Sturt Highway towards Berri, before the woman eventually stopped on the highway at Monash. Ms Buckby faced the Berri Magistrates Court this afternoon via video link, charged with six offences, including failing to comply with a direction, driving dangerously to escape police and driving unregistered with an expired licence.
Her lawyer told the court she was fleeing an "extreme domestic violence situation" and had to leave Victoria to come back to SA, where her family lived.
