A woman who smashed a wine glass and held the jagged stem at the face of a pro-Palestinian protester during a Deborah Conway concert in Hobart has been sentenced to a community service order.

The judge accepted Sharon Hall was "frustrated" by the interruptions to the concert, but that did not justify what followed. Sharon Hall , 66, was charged after assaulting a pro-Palestinian protester at a Deborah Conway concert in Hobart in May.

Pro-Palestinian protesters had gathered outside beforehand to hand out leaflets to attendees, in response to earlier comments Ms Conway made about Israel's military action in Gaza. The performance itself was then disrupted, first by a protester from the upper tier, and later by a protester in the front row, causing the show to be paused.

"She has been, essentially, a long-time fan of Deborah Conway … she has seen her approximately eight times prior to this night.""She wasn't particularly aware of the political context relating to Deborah Conway and why there might have been some protesters there," Mr Hilly said. Magistrate Jackie Hartnett described the incident as "serious", questioning Hall's intentions in smashing the glass.Magistrate Hartnett:"That was not her intention, your honour. It was borne out of frustration. She has done it in a frustrated way. She accepts she then pointed it at the complainant."The court heard Hall was "sorry" for what happened, and agreed that it would have been "a very frightening incident" for the victim.
