Gill Carpenter has understood the 'sustainable' outfit assignment for this year's Grand National

The second day of the Grand National festival sees thousands of people pull out all the stops and don their best outfits. Today is as much about the fashion as it is about the racing, and some lucky winners will see all their hard work pay off in a big way.

The Style Awards are a major highlight of the event, and this year two best-dressed racegoers will bag themselves a £4,000 River Island voucher as well as tickets for next year's Grand National and other goodies. And for the first time someone will also win the "most sustainably dressed" award, complete with a £2,000 River Island voucher, tickets for next year's event, among other prizes.

Our team of ECHO reporters are at the racecourse and have been speaking to many racegoers. One of these was Gill Carpenter, 56, from Lydiate, who actually created her headwear herself. She said: "I made it using cable ties from the shed... they said 'sustainable' so I thought 'right, I can do sustainable'. Everything else is from the charity shop, bit of Vinted, and I've put it all together so yeah, sustainable."

Gill said she goes to the huge event every year and has been creating outfits for the big day for more than 20 years. Emily Sleight, the ECHO's fashion reporter, is one of the Style Awards judges this year.Receive newsletters with the latest news, sport and what's on updates from the Liverpool ECHO by signing up here
